The Company

Panerai is based in Milan. The Panerai luxury watch is produced in Switzerland. The company was founded in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai, who took over a watch shop from his grandfather and later developed patents in the watchmaking and optician sectors. The company became famous in 1938 when the Italian navy ordered a diving watch with exact readability from the family business. Panerai obtained the movements from Rolex and installed its own dials with Radiomir luminous material, which was easy to read in poor visibility conditions. The Panerai Radiomir 1940 was worn exclusively by the Italian Navy. Due to its harmful effects, Radiomir was later discontinued and replaced by Luminor. Since only small numbers of all watches were produced, the Radiomir 1940 watch model from Panerai developed into a luxury watch (e.g. reference PAM00572).

The Radiomir 1940

The luxury watch Radiomir 1940 (Panerai) was developed after historical model. The design combines Swiss watchmaking artistry and Italian design. The dial shows clear lines with numbers with sandwich structure, which came into fashion in 1930. Two superimposed panes, where the fluorescent material penetrates outwards through the recesses in the upper pane, ensure optimum readability in the dark. The housing diameter of a Panerai Radiomir 1940 is between 42 mm, 45 mm, 47 mm and 48 mm. The sapphire crystal on the bottom reveals the movement of the Panerai luxury watch. Characteristic for the 1940s is the second display in the 9 o'clock position. The winding crown corresponds to the thickness of the watch case. When the crown is pulled out, the unrest of a Panerai Radiomir 1940 watch remains. The Radiomir 1940 is made of the finest stainless steel. The chrome content of the Panerai luxury watch is between 16-18 percent. The alloy contains 11-14 percent nickel and 2-3 percent molybdenum. The watchmaker uses this low-carbon alloy to give the steel better welding properties at a material thickness of 6 mm. AISI 316L1.4435 steel is highly corrosion resistant and hyperallergenic. The bracelets are available in fine calfskin and alligator leather with various embossing options. New models in the Radiomir 1940 collection are the Radiomir 1940 3 Days GMT Power Reserve Automatic Acciaio with a time display for two time zones, the 24-hour display and the date display. When the crown is pulled out, it is possible to set the hour hand in hour increments. The date display corrects itself. In the third position of the crown, the second hand jumps to the zero position until the crown is pressed again.
