Whether on the red carpet, in films and on television or in the social media: celebrities like to put themselves in the limelight and show not only what they can do, but also what they have and, above all, what they wear. While most fans and spectators focus first and foremost on the luxurious dress, the smart suit or the extravagant hairstyle, the gaze of watch lovers almost automatically wanders to the wrist of the celebrities.
And rightly so: the stars love their watches and will continue to show off exciting models in 2021. Not infrequently, these are watches that put every designer dress in the shade – at least in the eyes of a connoisseur. We present the watches trends of the stars in 2021 from true classics to rare luxury pieces.
Actors and their watches: Popular models in front of the camera and in private
In films and TV shows as well as in private snapshots, actors show off their watches. Sometimes they do this seemingly casually and possibly even actually by accident, but often they act as brand ambassadors and thus cooperate with the manufacturers of the products. As brand ambassadors, they show off timepieces at public appearances and do their best to make them shine in the best light.
This is how US actor Jake Gyllenhaal does it, for example, who was even used as the advertising face of the Santos de Cartier campaign. Nicholas Hoult, whom you may know from “X-Men”, plays (incidentally, just like Benedict Cumberbatch and Amanda Seyfried) in Team Jaeger-LeCoultre and sometimes published stylish pictures in which he adorns himself with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Moon.
Bradley Cooper, of “Hangover” and “A Star is Born” fame, is similarly committed to pushing his long-standing collaboration with IWC – the brand that Cate Blanchett also endorses.
And film stars Daniel Craig, George Clooney and Nicole Kidman are also among the watches brand ambassadors from film and television: All three actors represent the world-famous Omega brand.
What watches do the stars of the sports world wear?
In tennis, in football, among runners and in racing: watches are very popular with the stars of the sporting world, and here too we find brand ambassadors who enthusiastically promote first-class chronometers. Usain Bolt, whose Olympic best sprint performance is unforgettable, teamed up with Hublot back in 2010 and was honoured by “his” brand in 2016 with two special models dedicated to him (Ceramic Usain Bolt and Yellow Gold Usain Bolt), just in time for the Olympic Games.
Steffi Graf, tennis legend and 22-time Grand Slam winner, has been the face of Longines for years, and football star David Beckham’s tattooed wrists adorn watches by Tudor.
And yes, golf fans can easily find watch inspiration too: English pro on the golf course Tommy Fleetwood is one of the prominent supporters of the Swiss watch brand TAG Heuer and shows up with the TAG Heuer Connected model, among others – in the Golfer Edition, of course.
Celebrities from the music industry rely on these watches
Both musicians and models are among the top role models when it comes to the hottest watches in 2021. Anyone who has followed Tudor’s BornToDare campaign will know, for example, that none other than Lady Gaga herself is the face of the collection. The US singer, songwriter and producer Pharrell Williams, who has a soft spot for luxury watches, even developed his own model with the Richard Mille label: the RM-52-05 Tourbillon Pharrell Williams reflects the world-famous musical multi-talent’s fascination with the vastness of space and is anything but “08/15”.
Are you mainly interested in watches worn by German musicians? We can serve you with that, too: We have the Fantastischen Vier, pardoned hip-hop pioneers from Stuttgart, to thank for the Chronoswiss Timemaster special edition in 2014, which they designed together with the label. Since then, there have been a few more collaborations between the Fantas and Chronoswiss – so the Stuttgart boys seem to be staying true to their watch brand, presumably also in 2021.
The watches of the models 2021
Watch lovers watching the catwalks and fashion runways of the world, on the other hand, may be inspired by Adriana Lima and Franziska Knuppe for IWC, as well as Bar Rafaeli, her first becausebian brand ambassador for Hublot. The three successful models are convinced watch wearers and, due to their profession, have a particularly good knack for presenting the timepieces in a stylish and eye-catching way in photos and at live events.
Trend: Celebrities present their watches on Instagram
Being present on Instagram is an absolute must for most stars. They use the social medium to provide their followers with pictures and short videos, gain new fans and also advertise watches that they particularly like. A posting from 2021 has a double portion of timepieces: Bastian Schweinsteiger (IWC, Portugieser Tourbillon) and his wife Ana Ivanovic (Rolex, Rolex Daytona in stainless steel) are sitting together in a restaurant, although at least in this photo it is not food that is presented, but the watches on the table. In private pictures published online of actor Elyas M’Barek, who shone for example in “Fack ju Göhte”, we discover the IWC Mark XVIII – no wonder, after all M’Barek is brand ambassador of the renowned label.
Would you like another example? Rapper Drake constantly posts pictures of himself proudly wearing the Rolex Day-Date in yellow gold or other pieces of the label on his wrist. The list of celebrities who showcase watches on social media could probably go on indefinitely. A few more examples:
- Heiner Lauterbach with the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date
- Jérôme Boateng with the Rolex Sky Dweller
- Jimi Blue Ochsenknecht with the Rolex Datejust
- Kai Pflaume with the Louis Vuitton Tambour
Status symbol, statement, stylish accessory: watches as multi-talents and favourite pieces in the spotlight
Yes, celebrities and their watches: Some flaunt them as a status symbol, others want to make a statement with them and still others simply wear them as a stylish accessory to an expensive outfit. The year 2021 is still young, so we can look forward to seeing what favourite chronometer pieces the stars will bring to our attention in the course of the year.
