For many people, watches are much more than mere timepieces. They embody elegance and luxury, represent the highest art of watchmaking and are seen as a status symbol or a manifestation of personal passions. This is especially true if the specimen that is at home on one’s wrist is such an exquisite watch as a Rolex. But to what extent do watches allow us to draw conclusions about their wearers? Or to put it another way: What does your Rolex reveal about you? This is the question we will explore in this article, which is to be read with a certain irony and tongue in cheek.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona – racing driver at heart

Are you constantly mistaken for Paul Newman? No wonder, with a smart Rolex Daytona on your arm. You have petrol in your blood and know only one gas: full throttle. Not only on the road, but also at work, you like to reach top speeds and don’t let anything or anyone slow you down. Your first-class functional watch accompanies you reliably and with chronograph and tachymeter in view, you not only feel invincible – you are. A quick glance at the meteorite dial of the Rolex Daytona is enough to reassure you time and again that you can dare to reach for the highest stars and boldly venture into unexplored spheres. Even if you probably pursue another occupation in your everyday life, you are a racing driver at heart and love the thrill of sheer powerful acceleration. Admittedly: Not many manage to keep up with you. But your Rolex Daytona in gold or platinum is in no way inferior to you and ensures that you always keep an overview despite your flight of fancy. So you’re well equipped for the fast-paced rollercoaster ride called life.

Rolex Submariner – Head under water

As the proud owner of a Rolex Submariner, you don’t have your head in the clouds, but under water – figuratively speaking, of course. If your life had taken a slightly different course, you would probably now be a marine biologist or diving instructor in the depths of the underwater world. Instead, although you spend most of your time on land, your Rolex Submariner is a constant reminder of your love for the wet element and all that it conceals. Perhaps you own an aquarium where you sometimes submerge the watch under water as a test, while you watch the situationally quite distressed fish and slowly shrivels form on your fingers. And you realise again and again: the Rolex Sub is simply an incredibly robust, resistant piece! Much like yourself, because you too can, if need be, defy extremely adverse circumstances with almost stoic determination. Even when the water is already up to your neck, you don’t lose your nerve, but take a deep breath and prepare for the dive of your life. And when you resurface and gaze at the sparkling drops of water on your Rolex Submariner, you know one thing for certain: whether on land or underwater – you can’t be beaten.

Rolex Datejust – Joie de vivre

Your life is a party at which you are both host and guest of honour. With a Rolex Datejust adorning your arm, it’s unlikely to be a filthy student bash, but rather a stylish, thoughtfully planned celebration with appetising canapés, bubbly and live music. Aesthetics, a sense of style and public image play a major role for you, and you meet your demands in this regard with astonishing ease. In favour of classic elegance, you willingly dispense with anything that visually dazzles and pops, because you know: You really make an impression with high quality that stands for itself. You can handle the odd envious glance just as well and calmly as you can tightly scheduled daily routines and big challenges. You have both feet firmly planted in life, know what you have to offer and are not afraid to pursue your goals unflinchingly and tenaciously. Just like the Rolex Datejust you wear, you radiate self-confidence, authenticity and “joie de vivre” – no wonder the world is your oyster.

Rolex Explorer – pure spirit of adventure

Whether on an expedition to the summit of Mount Everest, on safari through scorching hot deserts or on an expedition in damp and dark cave systems deep under the earth: your Rolex Explorer is enough for you as life insurance. You are the kind of person who only feels truly alive when others would have long since fainted from fear. You courageously plunge into ever new adventures every day, pushing the boundaries of the possible bit by bit. Your motto could be “no risk, no fun”, but of course that is far too ordinary for you. You have no problem risking everything, as long as your Rolex Explorer stays intact, and know feelings of insecurity or nervousness only from hearsay. Your days are filled from dawn to dusk with at least extraordinary, sometimes even absolutely unthinkable activities, into which you throw yourself with all your might. And when you are then awakened by your vibrating smartphone and blink wearily to discover that you have once again fallen asleep at your desk, you realise with satisfaction: at least the Rolex Explorer on your wrist does not exist only in your dreams.

Rolex Milgauss – Divine Omniscience

Anyone who listens to your words is certain, at the latest when they understand , they don´t get you: you were already wearing the Rolex Milgauss when you were born. The watch model of thinkers, scientists and intellectuals seems to belong to you just as much as your dexterous fingers or your forehead, which is crinkled from forming clever thoughts. As a diplomatic person inclined towards pragmatism, you boast neither of your financial nor of your intellectual achievements – and you don’t need to. Your Rolex and your thoughtful choice of words speak for themselves and leave no doubt that you come as close to omniscience as only God did before you.

Conclusion: Diverse watches, diverse wearers

Did you recognise yourself in the type description of your Rolex watch? Or does the description not suit you and your life at all? In the end, it doesn’t matter, because this article has served its purpose if it could elicit a smile or two from you. And one thing is undoubtedly clear anyway: Rolex wearers are as diverse as the watches themselves – and that is exactly right.

During my school days I worked in the warehouse of an auction house and that was when I first came into contact with exclusive, mechanical watches. The fascination was born from that moment and has not let go of me to this day. So it was clear to me very early on that I wanted to learn more about the history and price development of watches - and of course I wanted to own an automatic watch at some point. (My absolute dream, unfortunately far away, was a Rolex GMT Master with the blue and red Pepsi bezel). During my studies, I took my first steps in trading used watches via various online marketplaces and was then able to afford a used Breitling Colt.
