The history of square watches

In the early 19th century, wristwatches were a new attraction and therefore exclusive, compared to the table, pocket and wall clocks we were used to. This exclusivity was reinforced by the square design, as watches had previously been designed exclusively round.

Advantages of square watches

  • Any model is an eye-catcher

  • Square men’s watches are elegant

  • They can be combined with any style

  • A leather strap makes the watches look even more stylish

Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 Automatic Chronograph Gulf Special Edition

“Tag Heuer”, until 1985 just “Heuer”, became famous through automobile racing. In 1969, the “Monaco” model came onto the market, which is still very popular today, thanks to numerous re-editions.

This watch (REF: CAW211R.FC6401) scores with its striking, mainly blue dial. The watch also stands out because of its diameter, which is 39 millimetres. It is fitted with a calibre 11. The case is made of steel and the glass is sapphire crystal. Water resistance to 100 metres is guaranteed. The high-quality strap made of calfskin is operated by a folding clasp.

Bell & Ross BR 03-92 STEEL

Bell & Ross is known for square watches, they outdo themselves with every new watch. This luxurious piece of jewellery is no exception. The strikingly large Arabic numerals on the dial jump straight into the eye, so this watch gains a lot of attention due to the contrast and the size. The diameter is 42 millimetres. Furthermore, the watch with the reference number BR0392-BLC-ST is rounded at the corners. This makes it appear in a more refined light. It also produces light itself. The numerals, indices, hours and minutes are filled with Superluminova. This means that the time can be read perfectly even at night. In addition to the noble look, it is also sporty. A rubber strap with a pin buckle makes it comfortable to wear.  The buckle is made of satin-finished, polished steel. Water resistance to 100 metres is guaranteed.

During my school days I worked in the warehouse of an auction house and that was when I first came into contact with exclusive, mechanical watches. The fascination was born from that moment and has not let go of me to this day. So it was clear to me very early on that I wanted to learn more about the history and price development of watches - and of course I wanted to own an automatic watch at some point. (My absolute dream, unfortunately far away, was a Rolex GMT Master with the blue and red Pepsi bezel). During my studies, I took my first steps in trading used watches via various online marketplaces and was then able to afford a used Breitling Colt.
