Most collectors and watch enthusiasts would probably agree: Every good collection should include a Rolex watch or two. However, the prices set for Rolex luxury watches can sometimes be astounding. Rolex watches are certainly not for those on a tight budget, but there are certainly Rolex models that are more affordable than other watches from the brand. This article is all about Rolex prices and how much you have to spend on which classic and newer Rolex models.

List price

First, let's clarify some terminology and start with the so-called list price. The list price is the price specified for the respective model in the watch manufacturer's price list. Therefore, if you buy a Rolex directly from the renowned company's factory, you pay the list price.

Market price

Unfortunately, it's not always easy to get hold of sought-after Rolex models at list price. Demand sometimes significantly exceeds the supply of watches manufactured by the watch manufacturer. The result is long waiting lists and bitter disappointment when the desired Rolex model is currently unavailable and therefore cannot be purchased at the list price. This is where the market price comes into play. This is the price asked for the watches on the open market. In many cases – especially with Rolex – this is far higher than the list price. Therefore, if you don't have the option of purchasing a Rolex watch directly from the manufacturer, you often have to pay a higher price for the coveted models. However, there are exceptions: Some Rolex watches can be acquired in used condition at somewhat lower prices. We'll discuss this in more detail later in this article.

How much do inexpensive Rolexes cost?

Rolex watches are symbols of the highest watchmaking craftsmanship and therefore not bargains. Nevertheless, there are models that are more affordable than the average men's and women's watches from the brand. Anyone who chooses one of these three models will get a Rolex dream watch at a comparatively low price:

Rolex Oyster Perpetual

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual is a watch that made history. Launched in 1926, the timepiece was advertised as the world's first 100% dust- and water-resistant watch. To put its money where its mouth is, the Rolex Oyster accompanied British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze on her 1927 English Channel crossing. The Oyster watch withstood the cold water and strong waves, earning it a well-deserved reputation as an icon whose reliability, both on land and in the water, is up to any challenge. It's no wonder, then, that Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches remain highly popular today. Surprisingly, however, watches from the Oyster collection are quite affordable. Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches for men and women start at a modest €4,750.

Rolex Datejust 41

When it comes to more affordable Rolex watches, the Rolex Datejust is a must-have. The watch, which is also available as a ladies' watch under the name Lady Datejust, was relaunched in 2017. With a diameter of 41 mm, the "new" Rolex Datejust models feature the signature date display and are definitely among the Rolex watches that perfectly complement any outfit. The Rolex Datejust 41 in stainless steel with an Oyster bracelet can be purchased at a surprisingly affordable list price of €7,150.

Rolex Submariner 41

Another classic with reasonable prices is the Rolex Submariner 41. The 41mm Rolex watch was once the first diver's watch capable of withstanding water to depths of 100m, and, like the Oyster Perpetual, went down in history. The 2020 Rolex Submariner model, which does not have a date display, has a list price of €7,550 for the stainless steel version.

How much do the most famous Rolexes cost?

From the most affordable Rolex watches, we now come directly to the prices for the most popular Rolex models.

Rolex Submariner

Attentive readers will notice that we've already mentioned the Rolex Submariner. Nevertheless, this iconic model definitely deserves another mention, as it is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable Rolex watches of all time. As already mentioned, prices for Rolex Submariner models start at around €7,550 – at least if you can purchase a model through the manufacturer's website. On the independent market, Rolex Submariner timepieces often sell for twice that price. Therefore, regardless of the exact reference, you should expect a price increase compared to the list price.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual

The Oyster Perpetual is also mentioned in this article, not for the first time. This magnificent Rolex watch, introduced by Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf, can be found in almost every major watch collection and is available in simple models starting at €7,150. In recent years, special vintage Oyster references have sold for record prices of over one million US dollars.

Rolex GMT-Master II

The Rolex GMT-Master II has always been known as the perfect watch for globetrotters and frequent travelers. A GMT-Master II traditionally displays two time zones and draws attention with its two-tone bezel. With names like "Coke," "Pepsi," and "Sprite," Rolex GMT-Master watches represent prestige and good taste in every respect. These status symbols vary greatly in price. A stainless steel "Pepsi" is reasonably priced at a list price of €8,800, but is more likely to change hands on the open market for €15,000 and up.

Rolex Daytona

Every dedicated collector knows: anyone hoping to snag a Rolex Daytona at list price from the website is a rare feat, and one that requires a great deal of luck. Daytona timepieces, whose most famous wearer was racing driver Paul Newman, are hard to beat in terms of exclusivity and desirability. Anyone who owns a Rolex Daytona can rely on its outstanding value and is sure to attract many envious glances. Rolex only discloses the exact list prices for the higher-end models upon request. However, it is known that a platinum Rolex Daytona can sell for between €70,000 and €90,000. The stainless steel Rolex Daytona with white gold indices is significantly cheaper, costing around €11,950.

Rolex Milgauss

Among the most famous Rolex watches are the Milgauss models, where the name says it all. The watch is known worldwide for its reliability and resistance to magnetic interference. A stainless steel Milgauss is offered at a list price of €7,600; market prices for this Rolex watch are usually higher.

How much do the most expensive Rolexes cost?

Rolex Daytona, GMT-Master II, Sky-Dweller, Rolex Day Date, Submariner, No Date, Yacht-Master II, or perhaps a Rolex Sea-Dweller: Which Rolex watch models are likely to fetch the highest price? The answer: It's the original Paul Newman Daytona. This particular Rolex Daytona, worn by racing driver Paul Newman himself, was auctioned in 2017 for a whopping $17.8 million. A price that is unparalleled. Less exorbitant in price, but still incredibly expensive, are Rolex "Iced-Out Timepieces." These are models that are entirely set in diamonds, and their list prices are correspondingly high. For example, there's the Rolex Rainbow Daytona for almost €290,000, the €430,000 Day Date 40 Ice, or the legendary Rolex GMT-Master II Ice, which costs a whopping €485,000. Depending on the model, the prices for a Rolex watch are virtually unlimited.

How much does a used Rolex cost?

The price of a used Rolex watch is determined, among other things, by its condition. Used vintage Rolex models that show obvious signs of wear can sometimes be purchased for comparatively very low prices. Vintage watches in excellent condition, however, can command hefty prices despite being labeled "used." For example, many Rolex Daytona or GMT-Master II models are resold well above their list price, even in good used condition. Therefore, if you want to own a classic Rolex watch, you have to be prepared to pay a certain price—even for used vintage watches bearing the Rolex logo.

Can you buy a Rolex on installments?

Considering the prices of Rolex watches, it's understandable that some watch collectors wonder whether it's possible to purchase a Rolex model on installments. Purchasing a watch on installments—whether it's a No Date, Day Date 40, GMT-Master, or Yacht Master II—is generally an attractive option, and one that's now offered by numerous dealers and shops. However, the extent to which purchasing a watch on installments is advisable always depends on the individual's financial circumstances.

How much does a Rolex service cost?

If you're the proud owner of a Rolex watch, you'll naturally want to take proper care of it, which may include regular professional servicing. The price for servicing a Rolex watch varies from model to model and from provider to provider. The price also naturally depends on how time-consuming and complex the specific maintenance of the Rolex is. Therefore, it's hard to say in general terms what it costs to have a classic Rolex serviced. However, you should expect to pay at least €500.

Conclusion - Costs depend heavily on the respective model

Some Rolex watches—for example, an exclusive Rolex GMT-Master or Daytona reference—are incredibly expensive, making other Rolex timepieces seem almost cheap, even though they still cost several thousand euros. The fact is: The price of a Rolex depends heavily on the model and condition of the watch. Market prices are often far higher than Rolex's listed price. In conclusion, a Rolex watch is an investment and symbolizes prestige and the highest watchmaking craftsmanship. Therefore, it is entirely justified that Rolex models are generally not offered at bargain prices.
