About Breitling
Breitling is a Swiss manufacturer of precision chronographs and professional instrument watches. The range centres on aviation, diving and sport – on fields, that is, in which a watch has to be read while you are doing something else. This shapes the design: powerful cases, high-contrast dials, large luminous indices and bezels that serve a purpose.
Its hallmark is the combination of technical ambition and an unmistakable presence. Chronometer-certified movements, robust construction and a design that never looks arbitrary make Breitling the brand for all those who regard a watch as an instrument and not merely as a piece of jewellery.
From chronograph specialist to the brand of aviation
Léon Breitling founded his company in 1884 in Saint-Imier in the Bernese Jura and specialised from the outset in precision instruments for industry, sport and science. Short-time measurement became the core business: 1915 saw the first chronograph with a dedicated pusher, in 1923 Breitling separated the start and reset functions from one another, and in 1934 the second pusher was added – the operating logic by which every modern chronograph still works today. In 1936 the house became a supplier to the Royal Air Force, in 1942 the Chronomat appeared, and the early 1950s brought the Navitimer, whose slide-rule bezel allowed pilots to perform navigational calculations on the wrist and which remains the brand's best-known model to this day. Since the change of ownership to CVC Capital Partners in 2017 and the acquisition of a majority stake by Partners Group at the end of 2022, Breitling has markedly streamlined its range and ordered it by field of use. The head office is in Grenchen, movement production in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
The collections at a glance
Today's range is divided into a few clearly defined lines. The Navitimer is the pilot's watch with a slide rule, available in 41, 43 and 46 millimetres as well as in a GMT version. The Chronomat is the sporting yet elegant everyday chronograph with its distinctive rider-tab bezel and Rouleaux bracelet. The Superocean is the house's diver's watch, the Superocean Heritage its more civilian sister in 1950s style. The Premier brings together the classically styled models on a leather strap, the Avenger the robust instrument watches with high legibility. Added to these are the Top Time as a revival of the 1960s chronographs, the lightweight Endurance Pro in Breitlight with a thermocompensated quartz movement, and the Classic AVI as a nod to the cockpit clocks of the post-war years.
In-house calibres and chronometer certification
The great majority of the range is certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute COSC – a standard of accuracy that Breitling has declared central to the brand for decades. The most important in-house movement is the manufacture calibre B01, presented in 2009: an automatic chronograph with a column wheel, vertical clutch and around 70 hours of power reserve; it drives the B01 versions of the Navitimer, Chronomat, Premier and Avenger. Alongside it stand the hand-wound calibre B09 on the same base, the B20 in the Superocean Heritage and the B31 in the three-hand models. On watches with a mechanical Breitling manufacture movement the maker grants a five-year international warranty, and two years on all others – in both cases from the date of purchase and valid worldwide.
