From Cosmograph to Daytona

Rolex introduced the Cosmograph in 1963 as a chronograph for racing drivers. Shortly afterwards the name Daytona appeared on the dial, a reference to the racetrack in Florida with which Rolex has been associated since the early 1960s. Since 2000 the Daytona has been powered by an in-house chronograph movement, and in 2016 the steel version 116500LN received a Cerachrom ceramic bezel.

The 2023 generation

The current Daytona with references such as the 126500LN still measures 40 mm and is water-resistant to 100 metres. Inside works calibre 4131 with around 72 hours of power reserve and Chronergy escapement, certified as a Superlative Chronometer. Gold models such as the 126515LN, 126518LN and 126519LN often come on the Oysterflex bracelet made of elastomer-coated metal blades.

Variants and nicknames

Collectors call the steel Daytona with white dial and black subdials the Panda. The Rainbow has a bezel set with sapphires in rainbow colours, and white gold models are available with meteorite dials. For the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Daytona Le Mans with a 24-hour counter appeared in 2023.
