The Story of the Rolex Explorer II – Born for Explorers

Introduced in 1971 as the successor to the legendary Explorer I, the Rolex Explorer II was specifically designed for adventurers who venture into extreme environments. Cavers, polar explorers, and mountaineers needed a watch that would perform reliably under the harshest conditions—and that's exactly what the Explorer II was designed for.

A key feature of the watch is its distinctive 24-hour bezel. It was designed to distinguish between day and night, even in dim environments—an essential feature for explorers spending long periods underground or in the Arctic. With the introduction of new references, the design has been refined, but its character as a robust expedition watch has always been maintained.

The Rolex Explorer II models – Timeless functionality

The Rolex Explorer II is available in various references, all known for their exceptional durability and technical perfection.

Explorer II 40 mm (Ref. 16570 & older models): These classics with 40 mm cases and narrower hands are particularly popular with collectors.
Explorer II 42mm (Ref. 216570 & 226570): The newer models make a modern statement with their 42 mm case and impress with improved readability, a larger Chromalight luminous dial and the powerful caliber 3285.

With the options of black or white (“Polar Dial”), the Explorer II offers aesthetic variety that is suitable for both outdoor adventures and everyday use.

Design & Materials – Robustness meets elegance

The Rolex Explorer II is built for the toughest conditions. Its case is made of Oystersteel, a particularly durable stainless steel alloy also used in aerospace engineering. Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the dial, while the screw-down Twinlock crown ensures water resistance to 100 meters.

Another highlight is the fixed 24-hour stainless steel bezel, which, in combination with the striking orange GMT hand, enables a second time zone – ideal for frequent travelers and adventurers.
