The History of Rolex Chronographs – From the Beginning to the Daytona
The first Rolex chronographs were developed in the 1930s and 1940s and featured classic pushers, tachymeter scales, and hand-wound movements. These early models laid the foundation for the famous Cosmograph Daytona, introduced in the 1960s specifically for racing drivers. Its name derives from the Daytona International Speedway in Florida, one of the most famous racetracks in the world.
Initially, the Daytona was equipped with hand-wound movements (e.g., Valjoux 72) until Rolex switched to a modified automatic movement (Zenith El Primero Caliber 4030) in the 1980s. Since 2000, Rolex has used exclusively in-house movements, initially the Caliber 4130 and, in the latest generation, the Caliber 4131. Today, the Daytona is one of the most coveted Rolex models and remains a symbol of sportiness, precision, and luxury.
Design & Functions – Sporty aesthetics meets state-of-the-art technology
A Rolex chronograph combines technological innovation with timeless design. Particularly striking are the three totalizers on the dial, the tachymeter scale on the bezel, and the high-quality materials. Depending on the model, the Daytona is available in stainless steel (Oystersteel), Rolesor (stainless steel & gold), yellow gold, Everose gold, or platinum.
Technically, it boasts the new Rolex Caliber 4131, which offers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours and is renowned for its precision. The screw-down pushers ensure water resistance to 100 meters, making the watch ideal not only for motorsports but also for everyday wear.
