The clever move of the watchmaker from Kulmbach
Many people are unaware of the family affiliation, although Tudor does not deny the similarity to its parent brand. Watch pioneer and brilliant visionary Hans Wilsdorf, born in Kulmbach, Franconia, and founder of the Rolex brand in Geneva at just 24 years of age, was also far ahead of his time in marketing – or at least in his industry. After his Rolex had already enjoyed a distinguished career, he considered price segmentation at Rolex. A second watch line would open up new markets and target groups and stabilize further growth. Wilsdorf wanted to establish a brand that would be more cost-effective and affordable than the Rolex, but just as efficient and powerful. As early as 1926, he had the brand "The Tudor" registered in the commercial register through the company Veuve de Philippe Hüther. He took over the brand in 1936, and in 1946 he founded the subsidiaryMontres Tudor SAFair price + Rolex quality was the magic formula. The strategy worked: ARolex Lady Oyster Perpetualcosts more than double aTudor Grantour for ladies. Customer-friendly pricing, while maintaining Rolex standards, was made possible by the use of subcontracted movements of exclusively Swiss origin. Since 1990, Tudor has been autonomous in the production of cases, crowns, and backs, which until then had come from Rolex production. In its 50th year, celebrated in 1996,Montres Tudor SAhas long since grown into an independent, high-quality brand and was able to step out of the shoes of its big sister: Tudor watches, crowns, straps, and cases no longer bore the previously common references to Rolex. The enterprising entrepreneur Wilsdorf created additional brands such as Aqua, Oyser, Genex, W&D, Rolwatco, Unicorn, and Marconi. But it was left to Tudor to skim the cream alongside the main brand Rolex. HORANDO promotes watch purchases online and simultaneously trades in brick-and-mortar stores with exquisite watches, world-renowned deluxe wristwatches, interesting newcomers, and established luxury brands. The bold face of the TUDOR
Unlike Rolex, Tudor's brand image is focused on adventure, tests of strength, and dynamism. The brand promises an escape from the familiar world, offering fictitious journeys through arctic expanses, over volcanic craters, and along steep coastlines. Everyday cowboys who set few limits for themselves identify with it. Natural forces, eruptions, and wilderness are evoked, along with fantasy and imagination, boldness and courage, and visionary power. Calculable risk and the will to accept it. Clear colors that embody emotions, experiences, events, or—as in the case of diving watches—the secrets of the underwater world, set visual accents. Tudor's aesthetic language is focused on sport, nature, and technology. The North Flag andGrantourThis is expressed in the matte surface of the brushed case, in sandblasted details, and in the contrasting colors.
