Bell & Ross

Bruno Belamich and Carlos-Antonio Rosillo founded Bell & Ross in 1992 with a clear mission: to build watches that meet the demands of professional pilots, bomb disposal experts and divers. From this brief came the BR 01 in 2005 and with it the square case shape with four visible screws at the corners, which remains the brand's hallmark to this day. The model was the onboard instrument in an aircraft cockpit: a round dial in a square frame, large luminous numerals and maximum legibility even under vibration and in poor light. The manufacture is based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and the brand has belonged to the Chanel group since 2002.

The Bell & Ross collections at a glance

The range is divided into a small number of clearly separated lines. At 41 millimetres, the BR 03 is the brand's best-selling instrument watch and covers the entire spectrum, from the three-hand model through GMT and chronograph to the Diver divers' version. Since 2019 the BR 05 has translated the same square form into an urban sports watch with softer edges and an integrated bracelet. Under BR-X, Bell & Ross groups together its exceptional technical models: tourbillons, skeletonised movements, sapphire cases and materials such as carbon or ceramic. To these are added the round vintage line BR V, which draws on the cockpit instruments of the post-war years, and the compact BR S for smaller wrists.

Why the case is square

The four screws at the corners of the case are not decoration. They come directly from the construction of a cockpit instrument, which is screwed into an instrument console. Bell & Ross has retained this principle rather than merely imitating it: the case is screwed together, not pressed, and the bezel can be removed. The dial layout follows the same model – Arabic numerals in a large typeface, broad luminous material on hands and indices, a minimum of additional information. The idea behind it is always the same: the time must be readable in a fraction of a second.

Movements and construction

Bell & Ross relies predominantly on Swiss automatic movements carrying its own designation – the calibres of the BR-CAL series. Depending on the model, power reserves range between 38 and 70 hours, and the chronographs run at 28,800 vibrations per hour. For the cases, ceramic, titanium and bronze are used alongside stainless steel, sapphire crystal is standard throughout, and water resistance ranges from 100 metres on the instrument watches up to 300 metres on the Diver models. For the tourbillon and skeleton models of the BR-X line, the movements are produced in small series.

Frequently asked questions about Bell & Ross

How much does a Bell & Ross cost?

The current price range can be found in the price overview on this page.

Why are the cases square?

The shape comes from the cockpit: Bell & Ross transfers the structure of flight instruments to the wristwatch, with a round dial in a square case and four visible screws. Readability comes before design.

What is the difference between BR 01, BR 03 and BR 05?

At 46 millimeters, the BR 01 is the largest line and closest to the instrument; the BR 03 brings the same design into a more everyday format of 41 millimeters. The BR 05 combines the square shape with an integrated bracelet and is designed for urban wear.
