      The history of the Portuguese line

      The Portugieser is one of IWC Schaffhausen's most famous and traditional model series. Its origins date back to the 1930s, when two Portuguese merchants requested a wristwatch with the precision of a marine chronometer. The result was a watch with a generous case, clear legibility, and technical precision – a new chapter in the history of the wristwatch.

      Over the decades, the Portugieser has evolved into a design classic. Its distinctive features remain today: the sleek bezel, railway minute track, applied indices, and elegant feuille hands. Even though it has undergone continuous technical development, it has retained its timeless character.

      Technology that thinks for itself – the Annual Calendar in detail

      The Portuguese Annual Calendar features the IWC-manufactured caliber 52850. It not only offers a seven-day power reserve, but also a sophisticated calendar display that distinguishes between the month, date, and day of the week – clearly positioned below the 12 o'clock position. The mechanism automatically accounts for the length of each month and only needs to be adjusted once a year, at the end of March.

      The winding system is powered by the proven Pellaton system, which is particularly efficient and durable. The sapphire crystal caseback allows for a view of the finely decorated movement – ​​a technical highlight for anyone who appreciates the meticulous craftsmanship of watchmaking.

      The Portugieser Annual Calendar is available in select versions – either in stainless steel or rose gold. Depending on the model, a silver or deep blue dial is paired with a hand-crafted alligator leather strap from Santoni.
