Functional design in aviation style
The design of the Avigation is clearly inspired by classic pilot's watches: large Arabic numerals, a highly legible dial with contrasting black and white or beige and black, cathedral-shaped hands with luminous material, and a railway-style minute track are among the typical features. The case is made of brushed or polished stainless steel, measures between 41 and 44 mm depending on the model, and is deliberately generously dimensioned – as befits a traditional pilot's watch.
Some versions feature a rotating inner bezel or crowns on the left side of the case, reminiscent of historic military watches. The asymmetrical design of special models like the Avigation BigEye is also a direct reference to aviation history. The slightly domed sapphire crystal provides a vintage feel while maintaining high scratch resistance.
The Avigation has a bold presence, yet its clean design is very harmonious. Brown or black leather straps with contrasting stitching, or NATO straps in muted tones, enhance the historic look while offering modern comfort.
Robust mechanics with precision for everyday use
Depending on the model, an automatic Longines caliber such as the L688 (chronograph) or L888 (three-hand) works inside. These movements are based on ETA technology, were reworked for Longines, and offer between 60 and 72 hours of power reserve. The chronograph movements usually feature column-wheel timing—a traditional, higher-quality alternative to the cam-wheel mechanism, particularly prized by collectors.
All movements are shock-resistant, anti-magnetically optimized, and precisely regulated. In many cases, they meet the COSC criteria for chronometers, even if no official certification is available. Winding is achieved via the easy-grip crown – manually or by wearing the watch on the wrist. The movement finish is simple but clean, with a Longines rotor and brushed surfaces, often visible through a display case back.
The Avigation series is mechanically sophisticated, reliable in everyday life and its design clearly emphasizes its functional character – a watch that is made for precise timekeeping and at the same time tells a story.
Variants with aviator character
The Longines Avigation is available in various references – from the pared-down three-hand model to the expressive chronograph. Special versions such as the Avigation BigEye or Heritage Military models reflect historical designs almost one-to-one. The colors predominate in muted tones: black, dark green, beige, or gray – coordinated with vintage elements such as blued hands and patinated indices.
Whether as a sporty and functional everyday addition or as a homage to the golden age of pilot's watches – the Avigation collection combines past and present with stylistic consistency and mechanical substance.
