About IWC

IWC was founded in Schaffhausen in 1868 by the American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones – hence the English name International Watch Company. His idea was to combine American manufacturing methods with Swiss watchmaking craftsmanship. The manufacture is still based on the Rhine today, in north-eastern Switzerland and thus away from the traditional watchmaking region of the Jura.

Its defining trait is the combination of engineering and clear design. The pilot's watches trace back to models from the 1930s and 1940s, the Portugieser was created in 1939 as a large wristwatch with a pocket-watch movement and the Ingenieur in 1955 as an antimagnetic watch for engineers. Add to that an early willingness to use new materials such as titanium and ceramic. This makes IWC the brand for anyone looking for a watch with a technical background and understated elegance.

IWC Schaffhausen since 1868

The American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the International Watch Company in Schaffhausen in 1868 and used the hydropower of the Rhine for modern, machine-based production. As early as 1884 IWC launched pocket watches with a digital display of hours and minutes based on the Pallweber system. In 1880 the Schaffhausen industrialist Johannes Rauschenbach had taken over the company, which then remained in his family's ownership for almost a century. IWC has belonged to the Richemont Group since 2000, and since 2018 movements and case components have been made in its own manufacturing centre in Schaffhausen.

IWC Portugieser

The Portugieser was created in 1939 at the request of two Portuguese merchants who were looking for a wristwatch with the precision of a marine chronometer. IWC fitted a pocket watch movement into a large case, which gave rise to the typical clean look with Arabic numerals, slim hands and small seconds. Today the family ranges from the Portugieser Automatic with a seven-day power reserve to the Portugieser Chronograph with two sub-dials arranged one above the other. The Portugieser Yacht Club is the sporty version with higher water resistance and a rubber strap.

IWC Pilot's Watches

The Pilot's Watches go back to the Special Pilot's Watch of 1936 and the Mark 11 of 1948, whose soft-iron inner case protected it from magnetic fields in the cockpit. Highly legible numerals, the triangle at twelve o'clock and a large crown still define the line today. The Mark XX is the plain three-hand model with a five-day power reserve, while the Big Pilot is the large pilot's watch with a conical crown and Pellaton winding. They are joined by the Pilot's Watch Chronograph and the TOP GUN with ceramic cases.

IWC Portofino and women's watches

The Portofino has been IWC's elegant line since 1984 and is named after the harbour town on the Italian Riviera. Its round, flat case, slim indices and calm dial make it a watch for both suit and everyday wear. It is available as an Automatic, with moon phase and as the Portofino Chronograph. With cases from 34 millimetres, the Portofino is also the basis of many IWC women's watches, complemented by smaller models of the Pilot's Watches and the Portugieser.

IWC Ingenieur and Aquatimer

The Ingenieur was launched in 1955 as an antimagnetic watch for technicians and engineers. In 1976 Gérald Genta gave it a case with an integrated bracelet, which the current Ingenieur Automatic 40 with its grid-pattern dial draws on. The Aquatimer has been IWC's diver's watch since 1967. On current models an external rotating bezel moves the internal diving scale, and the watches are water resistant to 300 metres.

Movements from Schaffhausen

IWC develops and manufactures a large share of its calibres itself. Best known is the Pellaton winding system, which Albert Pellaton designed in the 1950s and which today works in the calibres of the 52000 family with a seven-day power reserve, some of them with ceramic components. For the chronographs there is the in-house 69000 calibre family. In 1985 Kurt Klaus presented a perpetual calendar that can be set entirely via the crown. Watches with this complication and moon phase are still among the top models of the Portugieser today.
