The dial behind the name
Collectors use the name Wimbledon for the Datejust with a slate grey dial and green Roman numerals. The colour combination echoes the club colours of the tennis tournament for which Rolex has been Official Timekeeper since 1978. Rolex does not officially use the name – it has become established among enthusiasts over the years.
Why the dial works so well
Depending on the light, the grey appears lighter or almost anthracite, while the green of the numerals remains understated. The combination gives the already versatile Datejust a character of its own without making it conspicuous – one reason why this version remains in constant demand.
