One push instead of three
With a classic chronograph, a new measurement requires three steps: Stop, reset and restart. The flyback function combines these into a single push – the counters jump back to zero and immediately start running again. The complication was developed for aviation navigation, where course changes had to be timed afresh at short intervals.
Technically demanding in execution
To ensure the movement is not damaged when resetting under load, additional levers and a particularly robust heart cam are required. Flyback calibres are therefore more elaborately constructed than ordinary chronograph movements and correspondingly rare – they are mostly found in pilot's watches and high-end manufacture chronographs.
