Glashütte Watches

Glashütte in Saxony's Eastern Ore Mountains has been the centre of German fine watchmaking since 1845. That year Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded the first watch manufacture here, and today A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte Original, NOMOS Glashütte and Mühle-Glashütte produce their watches in the small town. On this page you will find the Glashütte watches of all four manufactures at HORANDO at a glance, from the understated Bauhaus watch to the elaborate manufacture watch with a complication.

What makes a Glashütte watch

Under the so-called Glashütte rule, only watches whose movement is at least 50 per cent made in the town may bear the Glashütte designation of origin. Typical features of Glashütte calibres are the three-quarter plate, Glashütte ribbing, blued screws and, in many movements, the swan-neck fine adjustment. These features go back to the 19th-century tradition and visibly distinguish Glashütte watches from Swiss movements.

The four Glashütte manufactures at HORANDO

A. Lange & Söhne was re-founded by Walter Lange in 1990 and is today one of the most respected watch manufactures in the world. Glashütte Original continues the tradition of the former Glashütte watch companies and belongs to the Swatch Group, best known for its Senator and Pano lines. Since 1990 NOMOS Glashütte has combined Bauhaus design with its own movements and is for many the entry into Glashütte watchmaking. Mühle-Glashütte has been building measuring instruments since 1869 and today makes robust sports, diving and pilot's watches.
