The history of the Nautilus

Gérald Genta designed the Nautilus in 1976, with a case modelled on a ship's porthole. The first reference 3700/1A in stainless steel measured 42 millimetres and, because of its size, later became known as the Jumbo. At the time Patek Philippe advertised it with the line that one of the world's most expensive watches was made of steel, as a luxury sports watch in stainless steel had been unknown at the manufacture until then. Still typical today are the lateral ears of the case, the horizontally embossed dial and the integrated bracelet with polished and satin-finished links. Most models are water-resistant to 120 metres.

Nautilus 5711 and 5811

The stainless steel 5711/1A with 40 millimetres, date and central seconds was made from 2006 to 2021 and is the best-known Nautilus. As a farewell, 2021 saw a version with an olive green dial and a Tiffany edition limited to 170 pieces with a turquoise blue dial. Since 2022 the 5811/1G in white gold with 41 millimetres and a blue dial has continued the classic Nautilus with date. There are also the 5711 in rose gold and versions with diamonds, and you will find a selection under Nautilus with diamonds and Nautilus in gold.

Nautilus with complications

The 5712 shows power reserve, moon phase, date and small seconds and works with a slim micro-rotor calibre. The 5726 combines an annual calendar with a moon phase, and the 5740/1G in white gold has a perpetual calendar. Under Nautilus Chronograph you will find the 5980 flyback chronograph and the 5990 with Travel Time and chronograph, which shows a second time zone with day and night indication. All models keep the typical case shape but look more technical than the classic three-hand watch thanks to the additional displays.

The movements of the Nautilus

Until 2019 the 5711 ran on the automatic calibre 324 S C, then on the 26-330 S C, which stops the seconds hand when the crown is pulled and also powers the 5811. The 5712 uses the slim calibre 240 with a gold micro-rotor, while the 5980 and 5990 chronographs use movements from the CH 28-520 family with flyback function. All movements bear the Patek Philippe Seal, which sets strict standards for precision and finishing, and on most models they can be seen through the sapphire caseback.

Nautilus for women

For women Patek Philippe makes the Nautilus 7118 at 35.2 millimetres with an automatic movement and a dial with a wave pattern. It is available in stainless steel, rose gold and with a diamond-set bezel, and the Haute Joaillerie models are fully set with stones. You will find a selection under Nautilus for women.
