There have only been changes or improvements of the Omega Speedmaster with regard to the calibre 321 from 1942– the company’s first chronograph movement – which was replaced by the enhanced version, resulting in caliber 1861. Each of them is top performer in its category which is amplified by its wearers. Wearing a luxury watch on your wrist you feel like somebody else, not because of the high value, but due to its fascinating uniqueness. Also the watch’s classy simplicity is very alluring: Precision, robustness, easy handling and readability are the characteristics which are highly appreciated, not only by committed OMEGA fans. The watch also convinces with a high level of safety – it has been tested very often and intensively like no other luxury watch in the world. So nobody is wondering why the vintage models from the 60’s and 70’s, given that they are still in their original condition, are hunted by collectors and that their value is steadily increasing.
A chronometer that handles each situation in space
Since the early 1960’s the US space agency NASA had been looking for a watch that could be used by American astronauts not only in space, also while stepping on the lunar surface. Several copies of the Speedmaster Professional were anonymously purchased from diverse retailers in order to test and compare them to other brands with regard to gravity, extraterrestrial magnetic fields, intense vibrations and serious concussions and its functionality under temperature conditions of -18 to +93 degree Celsius (e.g. reference 3188.8.131.52.01.006). In this context, temperature pressure chambers with high fluctuations of pressure, temperature, humidity, acceleration, decompression and oxygen level play a significant role. The Speedmaster has always kept its promise: Accuracy, pressure resistance, readability under different lightning conditions, water resistance, shock resistance, anti-magnetism and resistance to splintering. The fact that the Omega Speedmaster Professional can be either a manual, electric or hand-wound watch was another plus.
A success story bering rather a surprise for Omega luxury watches
Ever since, the extraterrestrial careerof the Speedmaster has been simply exceptional: It was worn by the Gemini -3- pilots during their space mission. Ed White was wearing it during his first extravehicularactivityin 1965. On 21st July 1969 the watch was worn as the greatest, scientific achievement that took place in human history, the first lunar landing. There are several legends around the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch: They say for instance that Buzz Aldrin’s watch was lost in transit. In 1970 the chronograph saved the crew of the Apollp-13-mission from a seemingly unavoidable catastrophe and since 1978 the watch belongs to the equipment of the Space Shuttle program. The fact that also Russian cosmonauts highly appreciate the Speedmaster illustrates very well the impact of perfect precision and outstanding technology.
Exceptional luxury watches also for everyday astronauts
The Omega Speedmaster Skywalker with its titanium strap continues the tradition of the Moonwatch. A highly precise quartz movement that is patented by the astronaut Jean-Francois Clervoy and includes enhanced features which were developed and tested by the ESA. The Omega Speedmaster Skywalker C-33 indicates three different time zones, has PET, timer, chronograph qualities, alarm function and perpetual calendar (e.g. reference 3184.108.40.206.03.001). Perhaps the Speedmaster Racing is not as iconic as the Moonwatch, but with its stunning characteristics it is not less exclusive than its widely traveled sister. The chronograph and bracelet are made of cold steel. From the inside of the watch you can hear the strong heartbeat of an automatic chronograph mechanism equipped with a column-wheel mechanism and Co-Axial escapement which are responsible for precision and durability. The Speedmaster Racing has an exclusive Omega calibre 3330 which is powered by a Si14 silicon balance (e.g. reference 3220.127.116.11.01.001).
