Why is it considered the first modern diving watch?
The Fifty Fathoms from 1953 brought together the features that still define a diving watch today: a unidirectional rotating bezel to control diving time, high contrast on the dial and a sealed case. It was developed for a military diving unit.
Where does the name come from?
Fifty fathoms corresponds to around 91 meters - at that time the limit up to which a diver could work safely with compressed air. The name does not indicate an ornament, but rather the depth of use.
