The Story of the Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea – Built for Extreme Depths
The Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea was developed to meet the demands of professional deep-sea divers. Back in the 1960s, Rolex launched the Sea-Dweller, a diving watch specifically designed for saturation divers. But with the introduction of the Rolex Deepsea Ref. 116660 in 2008, the brand set new standards.
This watch is water-resistant to 3,900 meters—an impressive value made possible by the innovative Ringlock system. This patented construction ensures the watch can withstand extreme pressure by combining a reinforced sapphire crystal, a high-strength stainless steel ring, and a titanium case back. In 2018, the Deepsea was redesigned with the Ref. 126660 and received the modernized Caliber 3235, which offers a 70-hour power reserve.
Design & Features – Maximum performance for great depths
The Rolex Deepsea is one of the world's most robust diving watches, offering an impressive combination of functionality and design. Its 44 mm Oystersteel case is significantly larger than that of the classic Sea-Dweller or Submariner, ensuring a powerful presence on the wrist. The rotating Cerachrom ceramic bezel with its engraved diving scale enables precise timekeeping underwater.
Another highlight is the helium escape valve, specially developed for saturation divers, which allows pressure equalization during ascent. The Chromalight display with long-lasting blue luminous material ensures optimal readability even in complete darkness. The improved Glidelock clasp allows for fine adjustment of the strap, allowing the watch to be worn comfortably even over a diving suit.
