The history of the Rolex Submariner Date – a classic with a practical function
The Rolex Submariner was presented in 1953 as the first diver's watch with a water resistance of up to 100 metres. While the original models had no date, in 1969 Rolex introduced a Submariner with date display for the first time with reference 1680. This innovation made the watch even more practical, not only for divers but also for everyday use. A distinctive feature of the Submariner Date is the Cyclops lens, which has made reading the date easier since its introduction. Over the decades the model has been continuously developed. With reference 16610, calibre 3135 came into use in 1988, and in 2010 Rolex introduced a Cerachrom ceramic bezel for the first time with ref. 116610LN. Since 2020 the Submariner Date has been produced as ref. 126610LN, offering a 41 mm case and calibre 3235 with 70 hours of power reserve.

Calibre 3235, a high-precision automatic movement with chronometer certification, offers a power reserve of up to 70 hours. Thanks to the screw-down crown and the Triplock system, the Submariner Date is water-resistant to 300 metres.

Rolex Submariner 1680 (1969 – 1980): The first Submariner with a date and acrylic crystal. Rolex Submariner 16610 (1988 – 2010): Introduction of sapphire crystal and calibre 3135. Rolex Submariner 116610LN (2010 – 2020): The first with a ceramic bezel and Maxi case. Rolex Submariner 126610LN (since 2020): 41 mm version with calibre 3235 and improved ergonomics. With its timeless design, high functionality and enduring value, the Rolex Submariner Date remains one of the most sought-after watches in the world.
The nickname Starbucks
The version with a green Cerachrom bezel and black dial is known among collectors as the Starbucks – a reference to the green logo of the coffee house chain. Rolex itself does not use the term, but it has become firmly established in the trade.
