TAG Heuer: always a tick or two ahead
An almost novelistic development. Not infrequently it is an instinct for backing the right horse at the right moment that catapults a company into the world class. And almost always it is charismatic personalities, following an inner mainspring and functioning as perfectly as a Swiss movement. It is fair to assume that the young Edouard Heuer had his goal precisely in view when he founded the company in 1860. With unerring instinct he occupied a market niche that was still untapped and, in 1882, laid the foundation of his success with the patent for the stopping mechanism. In 1887 came the oscillating pinion, which is still at work in many watches today, followed by the first dashboard chronograph for vehicles. The absolute breakthrough came with the Micrograph, the invention of a stopwatch which, with its ability to measure to 1/100th of a second, opened the door to an entirely new sporting era. TAG Heuer (then still Heuer) had found its passion. From that point on, success was inevitable. In the second half of the twentieth century and in the first decade after the turn of the millennium, TAG Heuer once again astonished the market with spectacular developments. Now they came thick and fast: the first chronograph with a world tide indicator, the Heuer Mareograph Seafarer, the first water-resistant wrist chronograph, in 1969 the third chronograph movement, the first quartz chronograph with analogue display and the first mechanical movement with belt drive, linear oscillating mass and ceramic bearings. Finally, in 2005, the first wrist chronograph accurate to a hundredth of a second became a milestone in the history of sport. With the success of digital watch technology, mechanical stopwatches fell behind. Today, however, well-preserved historic timing instruments in classic cars are very much in demand.
Always in the very best company
The list of “TAG Heuer ambassadors” is a distinguished one: alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Uma Thurman are Fernando Alonso, Shah Rukh Khan, Cristiano Ronaldo, Yao Ming and Clay Regazzoni. Ever since his part in the film “Le Mans”, the most important document of motorsport of its time, the film star Steve McQueen has been identified, even posthumously, with the aura of TAG Heuer. The collaboration with golf champion Tiger Woods gave rise to the Professional Golf Watch with a titanium case and a highly elastic silicone strap. Not even the most vigorous movements put it out of step. Throughout its history the company has occupied illustrious podiums, for each of which a dedicated watch model was developed: at the Paris World Fair of 1889 its chronographs were a public sensation, and the Olympic Games in Antwerp, Paris, Amsterdam, Moscow and Lake Placid relied on TAG Heuer for official timekeeping. In the fastest motor racing series in the world, the Indy Racing League, the brand became the official timekeeper. Ferrari and McLaren-Mercedes put their trust in TAG Heuer. For the legendary Carrera Panamericana Mexico the company developed the first chronograph designed specifically for motor racing, and at every Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz TAG Heuer set the standard. There was one interruption to this run of success, in the nineteen-eighties, when quartz technology was on the point of displacing the mechanical timepiece. Following the takeover by the Techniques d’Avant Garde group, the new yet long-established company TAG Heuer was born, which today belongs to the LVMH group.
Not for the introverted - avant-garde on the wrist
The long-established company recalls its glorious past and is increasingly bringing replica series of its legendary predecessors into the race: from the Carrera, Grand Carrera, Monaco, Aquaracer and Formula 1 through to the Silverstone and McLaren-Mercedes. A clear declaration of its bond with world-class motorsport and its protagonists. Each year the new releases from the house of TAG Heuer are eagerly awaited at BASELWORLD. In 2001 the company used the most important watch fair in the world for the relaunch of the Heuer Classic Re-Edition Monaco in an edition limited to 5000 pieces. In 2005 the luxury watch manufacturer presented the Calibre 360 Concept Chronograph, the first mechanical wrist chronograph in the world accurate to a hundredth of a second. With an accuracy of 1/100th of a second it measures records. The TAG Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 36 RS Caliper Steel Chronometer was honoured in 2008 with the prestigious Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève as “Best Sports Watch”. The following year, the revival of the Silverstone classic (dating from 1974) with automatic winding was a sight to behold. The presentation of the Monaco V4 Phantom in carbon fibre at the 2015 watch fair is to be understood as a homage to the great watchmaking history of the house of TAG Heuer. The company marked thirty years of partnership with McLaren with a new edition of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer. As new ambassadors, the beat musician David Guetta and the DJ duo Nervo bring a little glamour from art, music and show business into the TAG Heuer brand universe.
Once TAG Heuer – always more of it
Since 2002 TAG Heuer has also offered Sport Vision Eyewear. Glasses and sunglasses designed specifically for the particular needs of athletes and able to be worn beneath the helmet during a Formula One race. Appropriately for the discipline, they are made from aluminium or from the rubber that also makes Formula 1 tyres fit for high speeds. Anyone who cannot get enough of the Carrera, Camaro or Jacky Ickx luxury wristwatch turns to mobile phones, wallets, cufflinks, jackets or belts adorned with the TAG Heuer logo. Individualists and trendsetters who choose a TAG Heuer luxury wristwatch, whether buying a watch online or in a bricks-and-mortar boutique, have no difficulty standing out and drawing envious glances. TAG Heuer is simply in a class of its own. The highest precision engineering in extrovert packaging – absolute showstoppers and eye-catchers, not least because of their remarkable materials. The founder’s ambition, to stay a nose ahead of the competition in innovation and technical perfection, has been taken up by today’s honorary president and great-grandson Jack Heuer. Admirers and friends of TAG Heuer luxury watches reflect this philosophy in their desire for an extravagant and magnificent performance.
