In Guy Ritchie's Netflix series "The Gentlemen", the characters wear watches with a total value of around six million pounds. In season 1, Eddie Horniman switches from a Bremont Broadsword to a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1R in rose gold, and in season 2 he wears around 15 different models, including a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, three Jaeger-LeCoultre pieces and an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar. Susie Glass wears a Cartier Tank in yellow gold, later a Reverso in rose gold. The secret star is never seen in full: A Patek Philippe reference 1518. Which watch does Eddie Horniman wear?
We first meet Eddie Horniman (Theo James) as an officer at a checkpoint. On his wrist: A steel Bremont Broadsword, a watch with genuine military approval. Inconspicuous, functional, regulation issue.
After his father's death, he unexpectedly inherits the title of Duke of Halstead – and in the very same episode the watch changes. The Bremont is followed by a Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 5711/1R in rose gold, the time-and-date version with a brown dial, for which six-figure sums are asked on the secondary market.

What is remarkable is what does not happen next. Eddie urgently needs money to get rid of the drug barons on his estate. Selling the watch never crosses his mind. It is part of his inheritance, not of his assets. Later it is taken from him – and comes back. In the last episode of the first season, he wears a Panerai Luminor on a leather strap. A more precise commentary on old money is hardly possible with three props.
Season 2: The duke becomes a collector
In the second season, Eddie has settled into his role. The Patek has disappeared; instead, breadth comes into play – around 15 watches, with an estimated collection value of around 460,000 pounds.
It all starts with a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 16520, the so-called "Zenith Daytona" with a white dial and black totalisers, known to collectors as the "Panda". A vintage model from the era before the ceramic bezel, powered by a modified Zenith El Primero movement. Precisely not a new status symbol, but one with a past – and therefore exactly right for Eddie's role.

The season's three Jaeger-LeCoultre watches are not a random choice but a collector's signature. He wears the Reverso Tribute Chronograph – originally developed for polo players whose watch crystals broke during matches – at the turning point of the season. Added to this are the Duomètre Chronograph Moon in rose gold, which powers the time display and the chronograph via two separate power reserves, and the Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar.
Considerably louder is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar: Gérald Genta's octagon in steel, a blue dial, plus day of the week, date, month, moon phase and leap year without manual correction.

On his trip to Italy, when the business goes international, he wears the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch in Moonshine Gold with a green dial – manual winding, tachymeter scale, the only watch in the rotation with a genuine tool-watch past. A second Omega, the Seamaster 300, is the most down-to-earth piece in the cabinet.

The surprise of the season comes from Chopard: The Alpine Eagle in 41 mm as a sports watch with an integrated bracelet and the L.U.C Heritage Grand Cru as its opposite – thin, classic, in-house movement. Plus the TAG Heuer Carrera, the most accessible watch in the duke's cabinet and a sign that he no longer has anything to prove.
Three Panerai pieces round off the picture: A Luminor Due in rose gold with a green dial, another Luminor and the Radiomir Quaranta in 40 mm. He wears them when he leaves the estate and etiquette behind. On the very fringe are two watches that do not follow price-tag logic: A Vertex MP45 Heritage, whose brand goes back to the twelve British military watch manufacturers of the Second World War, and a Movado from the 1970s.
The common thread: The more confident Eddie becomes, the less it is about price tags and the more it is about selection. The most expensive watch of the season is not the one that says the most.
Which watch does Susie Glass wear?
Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) runs her father's empire with more composure than all the men around her – and in season 1 wears a Cartier Tank in yellow gold. Rectangular, thin, unimpressed. In one scene she has to judge whether a rare vintage Patek is genuine or fake; she passes the test with ease. For her, watches are not jewellery but reserves – something for later, once the business is done.

The fact that Eddie also wears a Reverso at the same time is no coincidence: The series comments on the relationship between the two through their choice of watches before the dialogue does.
The supporting characters reveal the most
Freddy Horniman (Daniel Ings), the passed-over older brother, receives his father's vintage Omega Constellation from the 1950s instead of the title and the estate. A beautiful but comparatively affordable watch – the difference in status between the brothers, cast in steel.

In season 2 he wears a Panerai Luminor Date. Stanley Johnston (Giancarlo Esposito), the American billionaire, is the counterpoint to the golden gangster: An F.P. Journe Chronomètre Souverain in platinum – probably the brand's first-ever appearance in a series – plus a Girard-Perregaux Ferrari Chronograph in rose gold.

Henry Collins (Max Beesley), a corrupt boxing promoter, wears the most obvious of all gangster watches: A Rolex Day-Date in yellow gold. Florian de Groot (Kristofer Hivju), the Belgian smuggler, opts for a Cartier Santos-Dumont XL in rose gold – the descendant of the first series-produced men's wristwatch, discreetly under the cuff.
New in season 2: Cico Maldini with a Rolex Submariner Date in solid gold, Sheikh Khaled Suliman with a Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 in gold – designed in 1977 by Jörg Hysek as an answer to the Royal Oak – and the shady Lord Hawthorne (Hugh Bonneville) with a Panerai Radiomir 1940 3 Days.

The system behind it: New money wears gold and sports models. Old money wears rectangles, manual winding and patina. And those who really know what they are doing wear a brand that the rest of the cast would not recognise.
The Patek Philippe 1518 – the secret star
The best watch scene in the series does without a visible watch. Stanley Johnston mentions that he wears a Patek Philippe reference 1518 – the first series-produced wristwatch to combine a perpetual calendar and a chronograph. It is never shown in full.
Understandably: 281 pieces were made, most of them in yellow gold, around 44 in pink gold – and only four known examples in stainless steel. A steel example fetched 14.19 million Swiss francs at Phillips in Geneva, the highest price ever paid for a Patek Philippe wristwatch at a commercial auction. It is rare for a reference number to be mentioned in a series at all. The fact that it is precisely this one shows how seriously the production meant it.
Who chooses the watches – and according to what logic
The person responsible is costume designer Loulou Bontemps. Her approach is less product placement than sociology: She distinguishes between characters who buy watches because they can afford them and characters who have collected or inherited them over decades – two groups that look completely different, even if both wear gold.
This is precisely what the contrast between Eddie and Stanley Johnston is based on: The billionaire has an entire room full of watches, the duke has inherited his. Old money versus new money, told through wrists. Bontemps is particularly interested in how strongly a watch's provenance changes its value – who wore it before can make a difference of millions. In the series, this idea itself becomes part of the plot, in the scene involving the Patek supposedly attributed to Winston Churchill.
Eddie's first watch shows how big the leap is: The Bremont from episode one costs just under 2,900 pounds. What follows is two orders of magnitude higher.
