History of the Datejust

Rolex introduced the Datejust in 1945 for the company's 40th anniversary. It was the first waterproof self-winding chronometer wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial. The Jubilee bracelet was launched with it. In 1953 came the Cyclops lens, which magnifies the date two and a half times and is still the hallmark of the Datejust today.

Datejust 31, 36 and 41

The Datejust 36 is the classic size and suits most wrists. The Datejust 41 looks more modern and has more presence, while the Datejust 31 is slimmer and popular as a ladies' watch. Smaller still is the Lady-Datejust at 28 mm. All sizes are water-resistant to 100 metres and have the Oyster case with screw-down crown.

Calibre and technology

The Datejust 36 and 41 are powered by the in-house calibre 3235 with Chronergy escapement and around 70 hours of power reserve. The Datejust 31 uses the smaller calibre 2236 with a silicon Syloxi hairspring and around 55 hours of power reserve. Rolex certifies all movements as Superlative Chronometers with a rate deviation of no more than two seconds per day once cased.

Bezel, bracelet and material

The smooth bezel looks understated, while the fluted gold bezel is the classic hallmark of the Datejust. Rolesor is Rolex's name for the combination of Oystersteel with yellow, white or Everose gold. The Jubilee bracelet with five narrow links looks elegant, the Oyster bracelet with three broad links sportier. For many references you can choose between the two.

Dials and colours

The Datejust is available with a wide choice of dials, from silver and black to motifs such as palm or fluted patterns and diamond hour markers. Models with a blue dial and green dial are particularly sought after. The Rolex Wimbledon has a slate grey dial with green Roman numerals.

Datejust or Day-Date

The Rolex Day-Date also shows the day of the week spelled out in an arc at 12 o'clock and is made only in gold and platinum. The Datejust is the more versatile watch because it is also available in Oystersteel and Rolesor. If you are looking for a classic Rolex for every day, the Datejust is a good choice.
