Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos

Developed by Jean-Léon Reutter in 1928, the Atmos table clocks are still inspiring almost a hundred years later with their unique technology and decorative appearance. Neatly placed on side tables, desks or chests of drawers, they flatter the eye and attract the interest of every visitor who knows something about timepieces.

Amazing technology: winding by temperature fluctuations

The special watches produced by Jaeger-LeCoultre do not require a battery and do not need to be wound manually. Instead, they obtain their energy in a uniquely ingenious way: from the air around them and its temperature.

Inside the Atmos is an airtight bellows container filled with chloroethane. If the temperature in the room rises minimally, the liquid part of the chloroethane changes its aggregate state and becomes gaseous. This causes the bellows to expand, whereupon its container exerts pressure on a spiral spring. If the temperature drops again, the process is reversed and the tension on the spring decreases. In essence, it is these movements that tension the mainspring of the Atmos and ensure that the watch works virtually "without a drive".

Anyone who thinks that high temperature fluctuations are required to keep a Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos running is mistaken: a temperature deviation of just one degree Celsius is sufficient for a 48-hour power reserve. If these slight fluctuations in the ambient temperature occur regularly, the Atmos will theoretically continue to run indefinitely without any human intervention.

The Atmos model selection

The unique Atmos collection includes elegant table clocks in these versions:

Atmos Classic

The most affordable Atmos table clock is the Classic model with a rhodium-plated or gold-plated brass case, which has a list price of €11,900. The dial of the clock, which consists of 207 parts, is adorned with large Roman numerals that impressively emphasize the classic design. The functions of the Atmos Classic are limited to displaying the time with hour and minute hands, with a second hand being omitted in favor of energy consumption.

Atmos Classic Moon

Listed at €13,700 and therefore somewhat more expensive, the Atmos Classic Moon features a month display and a lunar calendar. The complication-rich version of the classic Atmos is also made from rhodium-plated or (red) gold-plated brass and features Roman numerals that stand out against the white dial.

Atmos Transparent

The Atmos Transparente has no stainless steel case frame. It is set entirely in glass and has a clear Art Deco style. Instead of numerals, it only has line-shaped indices, which make it look even more straightforward and unadorned. The watch, which is priced by the manufacturer at €15,500, allows an unrestricted view of the perpetual movement, which makes it even more appealing to many a watch fan.

Atmos Infinite

The Atmos Infinite is also characterized by a glass base and case, but - unlike the previously presented models - has a rounded shape without corners and edges. Another striking feature is the deep black dial with chic silver rhodium hands, which crown the elegant look of the dial-less timepiece.

Atmos 568 by Marc Newson

The Atmos 568 is the result of a reworking of the Jaeger-LeCoultre classic by Australian designer Marc Newson. The case of this model, which according to the list costs an impressive €39,300, is made of the finest Baccarat crystal glass and features a transparent dial with Arabic numerals in an unusual blue color.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos: accurate table clocks with a decorative design

The Atmos table clocks are technically sophisticated timepieces that wind themselves, so to speak, and have been manufactured by Jaeger-LeCoultre for many decades. The collection includes several exquisite models, some of which are classic and timeless, others much more modern, but they all have one thing in common: With their outstanding quality and the special nature of their winding mechanism, they fascinate watch lovers all over the world.
