IWC Portugieser

The Portugieser is a luxury watch from IWC. The wristwatch, which follows the tradition of marine chronometers, is characterized by its masculine character and fine components. Strikingly different

IWC Portugiesers are built in the tradition of precise marine chronometers. Their design is based on these models. IWC was already producing this model series 75 years ago. At that time, the watches were distinguished above all by their accuracy, which was a novelty of their time. Equally accurate watches were only available as voluminous pocket watches. The IWC model series represented a sensation that could be realized thanks to a Savonette pocket watch movement. It is considered the first "large" wristwatch. It was created in the Art Deco period, an early period of wristwatches. In the heyday of bracelets and bangles, the first wristwatches had a similar character, small and dainty. Most watch cases were rectangular or square. IWC Portugieser were different and set new standards. The round cases of striking and eye-catching size and the reduced dial clearly stood out from watches of the time. Very few examples of this luxury watch were sold until the 1980s. Standing out with a touch of luxury and, above all, a lot of self-confidence is still the motto of the IWC Portugieser model series, reissued since 1993.

A special edition becomes an evergreen

The company's 125th anniversary was the impetus for relaunching this IWC watch family. The name "Portugieser" is new and was the inspiration for the limited special series released to mark the occasion. This enjoyed great popularity, so IWC decided to include the Portugieser in the fixed IWC range with ever new variants. Today's Portugieser Yacht Club Chronograph is the most popular model in the series and is one of IWC's best-selling watches.

Mirror of the company history

The Portugieser luxury watch is particularly associated with the history of the Schaffhausen-based company IWC. Recently, model series of IWC celebrated its 75th anniversary. Recognized at the time of its creation only by a few lovers of exclusive and unusual watches, the Portugieser has become one of the most sold luxury watches of haute horlogerie. The entry of this IWC watch into the luxury segment is closely linked to IWC's general history. As a manufacturer of pilot watches and technically precise measuring instruments for aviation and technical institutions, the company paved its way into haute horlogerie only from the late 1980s.

Traditional watches with masculine charm

As a Swiss company, IWC stands for precision, quality and innovation. For over 30 years, the company was a watch supplier to the Royal Airforce, among others. With its masculine distinctive watches in aviator design, IWC offers a wide range of graceful luxury watches to watch lovers all over the world. Innovative design, high-quality complications and exceptionally luxurious materials delight buyers of the various IWC model series in the upscale luxury range.
