Rolex: the queen of watch brands

Whether a seasoned connoisseur, a curious newcomer or a complete novice: the name Rolex is familiar to absolutely everyone. Given the immense renown the Swiss manufacture has enjoyed for decades, one would probably have to search long and hard to find a single person who has never heard of Rolex. The great standing of this celebrated maker is no accident: the history of the company is studded with small moments and great ideas which, in retrospect, paved the queen of watch brands its way to the very top of the watch industry.

The beginning of an incomparable story

In 1905, when no one could yet know that luxurious wristwatches would one day be regarded as everyday, coveted accessories and investment objects, a visionary resolved to take a risk. We are speaking, of course, of Hans Wilsdorf, the man without whom Rolex would never have existed. In London he founded a watch distribution business that was modest at first and began producing solid mechanical stainless steel models for the wrist. At a time when pocket watches were in fashion and wristwatches were anything but widespread, this was an undertaking that called for foresight and a spirit of innovation – two qualities still associated with Rolex today. Barely two decades after its foundation, the company moved from London to Geneva, where the headquarters of Rolex are to be found to this day. Meanwhile it became ever clearer that Hans Wilsdorf had "backed the right horse". The wristwatch developed from an item regarded with scepticism by the general public and perceived as unmanly into a sought-after accessory for the lady and the gentleman of the world. The courage to take risks that Hans Wilsdorf had so plainly demonstrated thus paid off, and the breathtaking rise of the Rolex brand gathered pace.

Rolex watches in the thick of it: milestones and memorable events

The path that led the Rolex company from a small business to a global enterprise was lined with a great many truly memorable events and milestones that shaped the brand. Let us undertake a short journey and visit the most important scenes of the action. First stop: Geneva in 1926. Wilsdorf succeeds in eliminating one of the great shortcomings of the increasingly popular wristwatch, making it more resilient and better suited to everyday life. With the Oyster he brings the first water- and dust-proof watch to market, and in 1927 its robustness is put to a very particular test. The swimmer Mercedes Gleitze takes to the waters of the English Channel wearing the Oyster, intending to swim across. Gleitze has to concede defeat, yet the Rolex Oyster triumphs and works flawlessly despite some ten hours in the intense swell. Following the trail of the successful watch brand, we travel next to 1931, when Rolex again unveils something entirely new: the first Perpetual rotor as a self-winding mechanism. While that development astonishes chiefly on a purely technical level, in 1933 and 1935 Rolex makes the headlines through events that amaze the layman as well. First the Rolex Oyster is aboard for the flight over Mount Everest; two years later it keeps the racing driver Sir Malcolm Campbell company as he sets a new speed record. We make a small leap in time and continue our journey in 1953 at lofty altitudes. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reach the summit of Mount Everest with Oyster Perpetual watches at their side. In the same year, with the Submariner waterproof to 100 metres, Rolex proves that the brand's watches are reliable companions not "only" on expeditions high above, but also on dives far below the surface of the sea. Yet we need not travel far along the timeline to see that Rolex swiftly surpasses itself where waterproofness is concerned. In 1960 a Rolex Deep Sea Special, attached to the outside of the Trieste, descends more than 10,000 metres into the Mariana Trench, only to resurface completely intact. The final stage of our journey through time, which of course touches on only a few of the countless significant events in the history of Rolex, shows that one does not necessarily have to look back to the last century to find vivid examples of the pioneering spirit of the Swiss watchmaker. In 2013 Rolex presents the two-colour Cerachrom bezel in ceramic and once again succeeds in delighting the watch world with an impressive innovation.

The Rolex wristwatch as status symbol, collector's piece and investment

What began more than a hundred years ago as a small business in London has, over the years and decades, developed into the queen of watch brands. Anyone speaking of luxury watches today will always mention the name Rolex, and there is scarcely a watch enthusiast who does not dream of calling one exquisite piece or another from Switzerland their own. Every Rolex wristwatch is the product of a success story without equal and represents ambition, achievement and prestige. Rolex watches are accordingly regarded as powerful status symbols, as accessories that leave no doubt about the good taste of their wearer, as a value-stable investment option and as a "must-have" that enriches any collection.
